During the summers of 2021 and 2022, I created a series of chalk murals, playfully dubbed “ephemurals,” on an old concrete retention wall built near my apartment in Indianapolis. The site became an activated space where curiosity and childlike play were unbound. Each iteration only lasted as long as the weather permitted before the rains washed it away and prepared a blank slate. By tapping into the ephemeral nature, and working with the elements, I was able to turn the practice into a ritual of sorts. This led to a greater appreciation of fleeting beauty and an abandonment of fear and attachment to outcomes. I still take the lessons I learned during this series into my other modes of making, and often try to rekindle that childlike way of creating.
